Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions

Siddarth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt & Varun Dhawan

This page gives you frequent information about the three debut actors of 2012. Director & producer, Karan Johar for the very first time introduced new young faces on screen in the film Student of the Year which released on October 19th, 2012. Being a fan of the successful film and frequently keeping up with the three fantastic actors, as a writer and fan of cinema want to keep my readers updated with their development through time in the Indian Film Industry.

Siddarth Malhotra, a Dehli boy who started his career as a Ramp Model during his college days. Siddarth has walked for brands like Pantaloons and designers such as, Manish Malhotra, along side surfaced magazines too. Siddarth Malhotra came into the industry just by being Karan Johar’s Assistant Director on passed films.

Alia Bhatt, born into a film family. Father Mahesh Bhatt and mother Sonia Razdan are both filmmakers and her sister Pooja Bhatt an actress herself. As a child, Alia’s first film was Sangarsh(1999), starring Akshay Kumar & Preity Zinta. She then auditioned along with hundreds of other girls for Karan’s film and was selected.

Varun Dhawan, also born into a film family, where his father David Dhawan is a film director and brother, Rohit Dhawan debuted in his first film Desi Boyz in 2011. Varun has a degree in Business Management and for a while wanted to be a wrestler. After being an assistant director on the sets of some of Karan’s film… he was then chosen to be in the film, Student of the Year.

Critics Corner

The film mostly received positive feedback and a few mixed reviews. Critic of Bollywood Hungama Taran Adarsh, gave a 4/5 star review on the film. Taran says, “Student Of The Year is a love story that traverses the trodden path. But Karan, is an artisan with intellect and taste and he ensures that the script is spruced up and modernized with such elan that it doesn’t offend the spectator’s wisdom or intelligence.”

A review from, Madhureeta Mukherjee of The Times of India gave the film 3.5/5 stars, She said, “Student Of The Year takes you back to your books and sinks you in true-blue Bollywood syllabus, following the ‘formula’ – Two boys, one girl, one glorious trophy and lots of testosterone. It is larger-than-life, colorful, lavish, beautifully shot and directed. With medleys, dance, drama and everything good-looking.”

Anupama Chopra, from Hindustani Times, giving 3/5 stars says,  “Karan Johar’s forte is excess. He creates fantastical worlds brimming with beautiful people and expensive things and yet anchors them in high emotion. His films work as both designer porn and soap opera.”

From A New Girl in a City, the film received a bias rating of 5/5 stars. As written, “I would say it had a little touch from his past films such as; ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ & ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, at the same time this film had it’s on flavor of full on masala.”

Turning the newbies into a Karan Johar hero & heroine

Ishaq Wala Love, is one of my favorite tracks of the film. Its a love song in your typical color coding, snow themed and very film Karan Johar love song!

Bringing the Bollywood dance number to the film!

Radha, my other favorite song of the film. The music, the cinematography and the entire look of the song is perfect. Every time I hear it, makes me want to get up and break out dancing, Karan Johar style!
